It's Never Too Late
There are moments in life when you realize that no one is coming to save you, and it's up to you to shape your future. For me, that moment came when I became a teenage mom. I knew immediately that if I wanted to create a life of stability and possibility for my son and me, education would be my path forward.
It wasn't easy. I was a single mother working full-time while attending school. My son attended more college classes with me than many adults ever do in their own lifetime. He was there beside me as I studied, took notes, and refused to give up. And eventually, I graduated. That degree wasn't just a piece of paper; it was a declaration of my commitment to our future.
Years later, after a divorce and time spent as a full-time mom, I found myself in a familiar place—a single mother again, this time with two elementary-aged children. The world had changed, and I knew I needed to evolve with it. So I decided to upskill. This time, I didn't bring my children to night classes, but they watched their mom work full-time and go back to school. And once again, it paid off; I earned my MBA. That chapter of my life required resilience, late nights, and relentless determination, but it transformed our lives.
Education has been my anchor and my launchpad. It gave me the confidence, skills, and credibility to stand on my own. And that's why I encourage others to pursue it, especially if it's something they regret not doing. As I always say: the time will pass anyway. Why not invest it in something that will change your life?
Last month, I received the kind of news that affirms everything I believe. One woman I had the honor of mentoring completed her bachelor's degree and was chosen to speak at her graduation ceremony. Another woman I used to work with, after years of doubt, returned to school intending simply to complete her associate's degree—and she did. Full of confidence and newfound self-belief, she decided to persevere and began her bachelor's degree journey this semester. They did the work, but I'm deeply honored to have played a small role in helping them believe it was possible.
To anyone who feels like it's too late, it's not. To anyone who doubts whether you can do it, you can. I've been there. And I promise you, the investment you make in yourself through education will echo throughout your life.
You are worth the effort. And your future is still waiting to be written.
